Senior Cat Care

Is your kitty starting to slow down with age? Cats usually age slowly and gracefully, so you may not see any drastic changes in your pet right away. However, Fluffy will need some extra TLC in her golden years. A Riverbend, ON vet discusses caring for a senior cat below.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend bringing your kitty in a bit more often as she ages, so her health can be closely monitored. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule. At home, watch for signs of sickness. Some common ones are hiding, poor grooming, limping, litterbox issues, and unusual behavior or vocalizations. Call your vet immediately if you see anything amiss.

As Fluffy ages, her nutritional needs will change a bit. Ask your vet for specific advice on her diet, including portion sizes, suitable treats, and advice on changing to a senior-formula food.

While your furball may not be as frisky as she was as a kitten, she’ll still have moments of playfulness. Take time to play with your cat regularly. This will benefit your furry buddy both physically and mentally. Plus, it’s a great way to spend time with your kitty, and get that motor going.

Older cats sometime have a hard time getting in and out of litterboxes with high sides. If your home has more than one floor, keep extras on every level. That way, Fluffy won’t have to use the stairs as much.

Brushing your cat daily will help her out by getting the dead fur and dander out of her coat. Just be very gentle!

It isn’t uncommon for kitties to get a bit confused in their golden years. Fluffy may forget where her water bowl is, or get lost on the way to her litterbox. When these things happen, cats often cry loudly to vocalize their distress. Just try to comfort your feline pal as much as you can.

Believe it or not, senior cats manage to sleep even more than their younger counterparts. Set out lots of comfy beds for your drowsy pet.

This is a special time in your kitty’s life. Spend time with her every day, and pay lots of attention to her. Senior cats are adorable!
