5 Common Cat Care Mistakes

One of the best things about our feline pals is the fact that they are such easy keepers. Providing your kitty with food, shelter, and a litterbox will cover her most basic needs. However, Fluffy isn’t completely independent. Just like any other pet, she needs good care to thrive. Here, a local London, ON vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

Lack of Veterinary Care

Keeping up with your pet’s veterinary care needs is very important. Even if Fluffy is an indoor pet, she’ll still need to be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on her exams, vaccines, and parasite control. Dental care is also crucial. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Ignoring Red Flags

Cats can’t tell us if they are feeling sick, but they do give off behavioral cues. Keep an eye out for changes in Fluffy’s behavior, appearance, personality, grooming habits, eating habits, and/or vocalizations. You’ll also want to watch for signs of sickness, such as hiding, respiratory issues, litterbox trouble, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you see anything unusual, call your vet immediately.

Poor Diet

Cat foods vary wildly in terms of quality. Many companies use slick marketing techniques to make their products—which are often mediocre at best—look like great choices. Get into the habit of reading labels, and look for brands that list meat, fish, or chicken as their first ingredient. These things should also be listed more often than anything else. Serving size is important as well. Ask your vet for more information.

Lack of Stimulation

We know, cats spend a rather ridiculous amount of time sleeping. That doesn’t mean your kitty can’t get bored, though. Provide Fluffy with lots of fun toys to play with, and make sure she has a comfy window seat with a good view. Your furball will also appreciate having some pet furniture, such as a cat tower, as well as a scratching post.

Letting Fluffy Roam

We know, many cats love outdoor kitty sports, like chasing mice, rolling around in the grass, and making paw art on our windshields. However, your feline friend will be much better off staying inside. Outdoor cats face some very serious risks, such as cars, weather, predators, and chemicals. Keep Fluffy safe and sound indoors!
