Caring For An Arthritic Dog

Did you know that almost two thirds of dogs over aged seven have arthritis? This painful condition can really take a toll on Fido, and can seriously impact his mobility and quality of life. However, there are things you can do to make your pup more comfortable. Read on as a Riverbend, ON vet offers some advice on caring for an arthritic pooch.

Beds

Arthritis makes dogs very stiff and sore. Your faithful pet won’t sleep well on a thin pad! One of the best things you can do for your furry friend is make sure he has a comfy doggy bed. We recommend orthopedic beds, because of the extra support they offer.

Exercise

Although Fido may not be super playful, he’ll still need proper activity to stay healthy. Most pooches need at least a daily walk. Let your pup pick the pace, and take him home when he starts to look tired.

Diet

A proper diet will go a long way towards keeping your furry companion healthy. Don’t let Fido become obese! If he does, those extra pounds will put even more strain on his already-compromised bones and joints. Supplements, such as fish oil, can also be very beneficial. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Veterinary Care

Arthritis isn’t curable, but there are now many treatments options for it. Make sure that Fido sees the vet regularly. Your vet may recommend more frequent appointments as your pet’s condition progresses.

Doggy Comforts

Many small things can help improve your dog’s quality of life. Pet ramps or stairs will help Fido get in and out of the car, or—if he’s allowed—on and off beds and couches. Raised dishes will be more comfortable for him to eat from than bowls on the floor. Your vet may also recommend heat therapy, such as a heating pad, or perhaps doggy massage.

Grooming

Keeping Fido’s coat clean and free of tangles and mats will also keep him comfortable. Nail care is important as well. Overgrown nails can really exacerbate arthritis, and can make walking uncomfortable.

Love

Fido’s mental and emotional health are just as important as his physical well-being. Pay lots of attention to your canine buddy, and spend quality time with him every day.
