Spring Cleaning for Pet Owners

Spring is in the air! Soon we’ll be able to put away our heavy clothes, and get outdoors to enjoy some warm weather. Spring cleaning is on the agenda for quite a few people in the coming weeks. If you have a pet, you may have a few additional tasks to see to. A London, ON vet offers some spring cleaning tips for pet owners in this article.

Vacuuming and dusting will go a long way towards removing fur, dirt, dust, and dander from your home. If your dog likes to look out windows, use vinegar and newspaper to remove Fido’s nose art from your windows.

When it’s warm enough, take Fluffy’s litterbox outside and give it a good hose down. Let it dry completely before you bring it back in.

Go through your pet’s toys, and see if anything should be replaced. Discretely toss out anything that’s ripped or damaged. You can put stuffed animals in the washing machine. Use unscented detergent, and the hot cycle. Many plastic and rubber toys can go in the dishwasher. Skip the soap: steam and hot water will do the trick. To wash rope toys, remove metal parts, soak the toy in water, and microwave it on high for a minute. Voila!

Wash your pet’s bedding, using unscented detergent and the hot cycles on your washer and dryer. For beds that are too big to be machine washed, you may want to buy or make slipcovers. If your dog wears jackets, wash his winter gear before storing it away for the summer.

Go through your furry pal’s food, treats, and medicine. Discard anything that’s expired. If you store your pet’s food in a container, such as a storage bin or pitcher, wash that as well.

Shedding Time

Over the next few weeks, your pet will thoughtfully start leaving fur everywhere for you. Use a squeegee, rubber dish gloves, or a damp sponge to remove pet fur from your furniture and upholstery. You may want to put down removable slipcovers. It’s also a good idea to brush your pet daily. That way, you’ll be capturing that dead fur with a brush before it gets everywhere. On warm days, take Fido outdoors for these beauty sessions, so the fur just blows away.
