Care Tips For Apartment-Dwelling Kitties

Do you and your feline friend live in an apartment? Cats are a great pet for apartment dwellers. Fluffy is small, quiet, and doesn’t need much room. Here, a London, ON vet offers tips on keeping cats in apartments.

Entertainment

Toys and playtime are a must! Give Fluffy a variety of playthings, and play with her every day. Kitties are also very curious, and they love to explore nooks and crannies. In an apartment, especially a smaller one, your furball may quickly run out of things to investigate. Set out things like boxes, paper bags, and newspaper tunnels for her.

Blinds

Cats love looking out windows! If possible, give Fluffy a comfy spot in front of a window with a good view. If you have blinds, your feline pal may very well try to make herself a little door, and could potentially get entangled. You may want to get a different window treatment. Also, make sure your windows and screens close securely.

Scratching

Your feline buddy will need a manicure station. If you have room for a cat tower, this would be ideal, as your pet will also gain a jungle gym, napping spot, and lookout point. However, if you don’t have space, hang a scratching board on the wall, just above Fluffy’s head. You can also make one, by attaching a piece of carpet to a smooth piece of wood.

Litterbox

Litterboxes make caring for kitties easier, but they don’t do much for your décor. If you don’t have a convenient spot for yours, you may want to conceal it. One option is to hide it behind an attractive folding screen. You can also upcycle an end table, storage chest, or even a buffet. Cut a hole for Fluffy in one side, and use the existing doors (or lid) for access.

Smell

Set out some pet-safe plants. This will not only make your place look fresh and cozy, it will also give your furball things to nibble on and hide behind. Plus, the plants will filter the air. Check the ASPCA site here for suggestions.

Veterinary Care

Indoor cats are usually safer and healthier than outdoor kitties. However, they still need regular veterinary care. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
